Ukraine
In Ukraine, WINGS is locally known as “Women with Intersecting Marginalizations Initiate New Goals of Safety” (Крила / ВІНГС). Since its launch in 2018, the program has become a vital support system for women facing layered forms of marginalization—including women who use drugs, self-identified sex workers, women and girls living with HIV, and displaced women and girls navigating war and instability.
Where and How WINGS is Delivered
WINGS Ukraine is currently active in 16 regions, including Kyiv, Odessa, Lviv, Dnipro, and frontline cities like Kramatorsk and Mykolaiv. The intervention is offered through community-based harm reduction programs and partner NGO referrals, with sessions delivered via smartphones and tablets—the latter provided by the organization when needed to ensure no woman is excluded due to lack of access to technology.
Impact in 2024
In the past year alone, 1,153 women from key communities have completed the WINGS intervention, gaining access to tools that:
- Identify and respond to intimate partner violence
- Build self-efficacy and personal safety plans
- Strengthen social support networks
- Connect to critical services in health, legal aid, and housing
Local Leadership and Partnership
WINGS Ukraine is implemented by Club Eney, a grassroots harm reduction organization with deep community trust and reach. This work is made possible through the support of:
- International Renaissance Foundation
- ViiV Healthcare
- United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women
WINGS materials have been fully translated into Ukrainian, and the team has developed implementation guides and manuals to support ongoing adaptation and scale-up. Manuscript: WINGS Ukraine Manuscript
