T-WINGS (Transwomen Initiating New Goals of Safety) is the Indonesian adaptation of the WINGS intervention, tailored to meet the specific needs of transgender women experiencing gender-based violence (GBV). The program also provides practical information about legal rights, available community resources, and options for accessing health care, counseling, and emergency services. It is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and community-driven, and connects participants directly to supportive services.
Where and How
It was developed by Monash University and implemented in Greater Jakarta and Yogyakarta in partnership with local transgender-led organizations. T-WINGS was delivered through tablet-based technology in safe, peer-led community settings. The language was translated into Bahasa Indonesia and also significantly adapted for the needs of Indonesian transwomen.
Impact Highlights
- Reached 125 transgender women within the first few months of implementation
- Strong uptake and engagement with the tool in both urban regions
- Strengthened partnerships between academic institutions and transgender-led organizations
- Helped build capacity among trans community members to deliver peer-based GBV interventions
Challenges
Public release of the intervention is pending completion of the randomized trial. Navigating social stigma and safety concerns remains an ongoing challenge. Building institutional trust and sustainable referral networks continues to require community collaboration.
