Kenya
WINGS+PM+ is an innovative intervention designed in Kenya to support women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health challenges in Nairobi’s informal settlements, where access to care is limited and rates of IPV are extremely high.
Where and How
This approach combines two evidence-based models: WINGS and the World Health Organization’s Problem Management Plus (PM+), which helps individuals cope with stress and emotional difficulties. Adapted for Kenya’s public healthcare system, WINGS+PM+ is delivered by trained community health promoters and tailored to the realities of women living in low-resource urban areas.
Impact Highlights
- Early findings suggest that the combined WINGS+PM+ approach is feasible and acceptable in low-resource clinical settings.
- The project demonstrates that non-specialists can successfully deliver IPV and mental health interventions when equipped with appropriate tools and training.
Challenges
There are currently no national screening protocols for IPV or mental health in clinics serving informal settlements. Addressing structural limitations, such as space, staff capacity, and follow-up systems in overburdened clinics, remains a challenge.
