Kazakhstan
In Kazakhstan, WINGS has been locally adapted as WINGS-UMAI—named after Umai, the ancient Turkic goddess of fertility and protection. Introduced in 2022 through a Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI)-funded project, WINGS-UMAI is helping women from marginalized communities access lifesaving services for intimate partner and sexual violence.
Where and How WINGS is Delivered
WINGS-UMAI is offered through NGOs and outreach teams, with the intervention delivered as a web-based, self-guided tool that includes visuals, videos, and avatars to enhance accessibility. Women can engage with the tool via smartphones, laptops, or directly from the websites of community partners. The intervention can also be supported by case managers or peer advocates during or after the session.WINGS-UMAI is uniquely designed for both the general population and key communities, including:
- Women living with HIV
- Women who use drugs
- Women involved in sex work
- Transgender women
It has been implemented in two communities:
- Almaty (intervention group)
- Taldykorgan, Zhetysu region (waitlist control community)
Impact in 2024
Since launch, 506 women from key populations have completed WINGS-UMAI from the intervention and waitlist control communities.
Study findings indicate that intervention community participants were significantly more likely to reduce physical, sexual and psychological IPV at the 6-month follow-up, compared to waitlist control participants.
For more information, see the outcome article.

- NGO Alma TQ, providing shelter for LGBTQ+ women
- Foundation BlagoDaryu, supporting women who use drugs or do sex work
Digital tools are now housed on:
Manuscript: UMAI Manuscript
